Peter and the wolf.
Symphonic tale

Performers: Natalia Sats, USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra

Description:
Symphonic fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev performed by the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the USSR. This work is specially written to introduce the listeners to the expressive possibilities of various instruments and to acquaint them with the basics of the musical language. Natalya Sats will talk about the symphony orchestra and the instruments that are the characters of the fairy tale.

The outstanding Soviet composer Sergei Sergeevich Prokofiev (1891-1953) - author of the operas "Love for Three Oranges", "War and Peace", "Semyon Kotko", "The Tale of a Real Man", ballets "Romeo and Juliet", "Cinderella", symphonic, instrumental, piano and many other works - in 1936 he wrote a symphonic fairy tale for children "Peter and the Wolf". The idea to create such a work was suggested to him by the chief director of the Central children's theater Natalia Sats, all her creative life devoted to art for children.
Prokofiev, who sensitively "knows how to listen to the time", responded vividly to the proposal to create a work whose goal is to acquaint children with the instruments that make up the symphony orchestra. Together with N.I. Sats, the composer chose the form of such a work: an orchestra and a leader (reader). The composer entrusted various “roles” of this fairy tale to the instruments and their groups: the bird - the flute, the wolf - horns, Petya - the string quartet.
“The first performance of “Petya and the Wolf” on the stage of the Central Children's Theater took place on May 5, 1936. “At the request of Sergei Sergeyevich, I was a performer of a fairy tale. Together we thought about how they would be shown all the instruments in turn, then the children would hear the sound of each.
...Sergey Sergeevich was present at all rehearsals, he tried to ensure that not only the semantic, but also the rhythmic and intonation performance of the text was inextricably linked with the orchestral sound, "recalls Natalia Ilyinichna Sats in her book Children Come to the Theater." On the record, this fairy tale sounds in her performance.
unusual shape of this symphonic work (orchestra and leader) makes it possible to introduce children to serious music joyfully and easily. Prokofiev's music, bright, imaginative, colored with humor, is easily perceived by young listeners.
“I really liked the music about Petya, the bird and the wolf. When I listened to her, I recognized everyone. The cat was beautiful, walked so that it was not heard, she was cunning. The duck was lopsided, stupid. When the wolf ate it, I was sorry. I was glad when I heard her voice at the end,” said Volodya Dobuzhinsky, a small listener.
A merry bird, brave Petya, a grouchy but kind grandfather are known and loved in Moscow, London, Paris, Berlin, New York ... in all countries of the world.
For more than thirty years, the fairy tale about Petya and the wolf has been traveling around the planet, radiating ideas of goodness, joy, light, helping children learn to understand and love music.
May this symphonic fairy tale come to your house today...

Teacher: And now, to tune in to a new topic, I suggest you play a game called "Guess".

One leader comes out, stands with his back to the class. The rest of the guys say his name one by one. The facilitator needs to say the name of the student, not seeing him, but hearing only his voice. The students play several times.

Teacher: Good! How did the leader, without seeing you, manage to accurately determine your names?

Sample student responses: by voice.

Teacher: Right! And how were our presenters able to determine whose voice was heard?

Sample student responses:

Teacher: Good! What are you good fellows! That is, each voice has its own color or, more correctly, its own timbre. Now let's open the dictionaries and write in it a new word for you TIMBRE, and give it a very easy and short definition.

(Slide 3 - timbre)

TEMBRE IS THE COLORING OF SOUND

Now you know that every human voice has its own specific timbre. Do you think that each musical instrument has a certain timbre?

Sample student responses: Yes, I have!

Teacher: Right! Each musical instrument has its own specific timbre. And there are a lot of musical instruments. And today we will get acquainted with some of them, as well as learn to distinguish them from each other not only by appearance but also in timbre.

    New topic (20 minutes + 15 minutes)

Teacher: Now listen carefully to the poem and try to name musical instruments that are mentioned in it.

Sample student responses: oboe, clarinet, bassoon, flute, horns

Teacher: Good! And what is the name of the fairy tale, which is said in the poem, who can say?

Sample student responses: Peter and the wolf"

Teacher: Right! And this fairy tale was written by Sergei Sergeevich Prokofiev. (Slide 4 - portrait of the composer). This was in 1936. This is not an ordinary fairy tale - it is a musical symphonic fairy tale. And it is called "symphonic" because it was written for a symphony orchestra. S. S. Prokofiev was the first composer who decided to introduce children to the sound of a symphony orchestra in a fascinating form, in the form of a fairy tale.

Each character in the story has its own leitmotif. Let's write in dictionaries one more term that is not clear to you yet. (Slide 5 - keynote)

LEITMOTION - A BRIEF MUSICAL THEME, CONSTANTLY SOUNDING WHEN THE SAME CHARACTER APPEARS OR IS MENTIONED ABOUT HIM

He wanted children to learn how to listen to symphonic music. And before the beginning of the performance of this music, the children were shown the instruments and played on them the leitmotifs of the characters in the fairy tale. During the performance, the children heard these leitmotifs many times and learned to distinguish the timbres of the instruments.

So, each character of the fairy tale has its own musical theme- a leitmotif, and your own instrument with a certain timbre that performs this leitmotif.

(Slide 6 - pioneer Petya)

The brave pioneer Petya is main character fairy tales. Its theme sounds like a cheerful march. And the theme of Petya is performed by a string-bowed group of instruments: 2 violins, a viola and a cello.

(Slide 7 - bowed strings) - listening to the topic.

Teacher: What do you think, what character does Petya have? How did his music portray him?

Sample student responses:

Cheerful, mischievous, joyful.

He walks, hums something and jumps.

Teacher: Good! Further, the next character of the fairy tale appears - this is a bird. (Slide 8 - bird, flute). Its leitmotif is played by a flute. This instrument belongs to the woodwind group. Listen carefully to her topic so that you can answer my questions later.Hearing the topic.

- What is the mood of the bird? How can you imagine this bird?

Sample responses from children:

Cheerful, joyful, happy.

You can imagine her sitting high on a tree branch and singing.

Or as if the bird very often flaps its wings and flies above the ground, not knowing where to land.

Teacher: Not bad!

The theme of the next duck character is performed by the oboe - this is also a woodwind instrument (Slide 9 - duck, oboe). The timbre of the oboe sounds "nasally" and the duck "quack-quack" is heard - listening to the topic.

What kind of duck does the music represent?

Sample responses from children:

She is slow, calmly walks along the road, waddling from one paw to another, and quacks.

Teacher: But here comes the cat! Its leitmotif is played by the clarinet, another member of the family of woodwind instruments. (Slide 10 - cat, clarinet) - listening to the topic.

What can you say about a cat after listening to its topic?

Sample responses from children:

A cat on soft paws carefully sneaks up to a bird.

Sometimes she stops.

Teacher: Petya's grandfather appears after the cat. (Slide 11 - grandfather, bassoon) He is worried that Petya went out the gate, because “places are dangerous. If a wolf comes running from the forest, what then? Its theme is also performed by the woodwind instrument, the bassoon. This is the lowest sounding instrument from this family. No wonder Prokofiev portrayed their grandfather. The bassoon playing the grandfather's theme sounds grouchy and hoarse in an old man's way. Hearing the topic.

Sounds like a grumpy grandpa?

Sample responses from children: Yes!

Teacher: Another character in the tale is the wolf! (Slide 12 - wolf, horns). Its leitmotif is performed by horns - instruments of the brass-wind group. Hearing the topic.

What can you say about the leitmotif of this character? What did you hear in the music, how does the Wolf appear before us? Is this a positive or negative character in this tale?

Sample responses from children:

The music portrays the Wolf as a dangerous predator.

It's an evil wolf!

Hear how he howls.

Teacher: Quite right! And finally, there are hunters who follow in the footsteps of the Wolf (Slide 13 - hunters, percussion). Now let's listen carefully to their theme and try to determine which instruments perform it. Hearing the topic.

Sample responses from children:

These are drums!

Percussion instruments!

Teacher: That's right, the theme of the Wolf is performed by a group of percussion instruments. Namely timpani and drums.

We got acquainted with the characters of the symphonic fairy tale "Peter and the Wolf", saw and heard the musical instruments that perform their leitmotifs. Now we are able to distinguish the timbres of musical instruments by ear.
